OK, that legal notice is a bit annoying...

This page has information on setting up a local network using a mix of dynamic and static IP addresses.

LAN Addresses

First thing to do is pick a subnet and then consider how to allocate IP addresses on the LAN. Here is my IP address space:

LAN IP Equipment Starting Address Ending Address
reserved 192.168.2.0 (only 1 address)
Windows/Linux DHCP Clients 192.168.2.1 192.168.2.32
Desktop PC 192.168.2.33 (only 1 address)
Open Static IPs 192.168.2.34 192.168.2.39
Netgear Router 192.168.2.40 (only 1 address)
Open Static IPs 192.168.2.41 192.168.2.254
reserved (subnet broadcast address) 192.168.2.255 (only 1 address)

As you can see I've changed the default subnet and IP address of the router. I work with a company that uses the subnet 192.168.1.x for their company Intranet, so I can't use the same subnet when establishing a VPN tunnel (routing problems).

Next, you need to configure Netgear router on menu 3.2. Here is mine (I've blanked out my ISP's Primary and Secondary DNS Server IPs):

--------------------------------------------------
Menu 3.2 - TCP/IP and DHCP Ethernet Setup

DHCP= Server
Configuration:
  Client IP Pool Starting Address= 192.168.2.1
  Size of Client IP Pool= 32
  Primary DNS Server= xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
  Secondary DNS Server= xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
  DHCP Server Address= N/A

TCP/IP Setup:
  IP Address= 192.168.2.40
  IP Subnet Mask= 255.255.255.0
  RIP Direction= None
  Version= N/A
  Multicast= None
  Edit IP Alias= No
--------------------------------------------------

Configure PC for Dynamic IP Address

Finally, configure your Win98 PCs. Here is my working setup for a a notebook that uses a Phoneline 10X USB network interface adapter (instead of an Ethernet card). I don't understand all the options, but it works for me.
